Riva House

KM’s design for living displays features learned from tradition, yet with an eye towards contemporary needs. This was the approach taken in this three storey villa in the suburb of Riva (a short distance from Istanbul). KM designed a space that brought together the visceral aspects of life – the rituals of living and lifestyle, with the qualities of physical space – the value of light, the spatial qualities of high ceilings, the rhythms of windows and shelving, to create a house that would grow as its occupants lived in it over time. The atmosphere is predominantly duotone, alternating oak wood and light shades that create a subtle play with natural or artificial lighting. In the main living space, attention is drawn to a horizontal fireplace, and to an abstract composition of panels.
